2026-10-01 10:50:00

Geely Emgrand EV was the first all-electric sedan launched under Geely Auto's "Blue Geely Initiative" strategy, developed on the proven Emgrand petrol platform. Serving as Geely's pioneer in the new energy vehicle segment, the Emgrand EV debuted in November 2015, with initial pricing ranging from RM228,800 to RM249,800. Through subsequent iterations including the Emgrand EV300, EV350/EV450, and EV500, its combined operating range expanded from an initial 253 km to 500 km. During the height of new energy vehicle subsidies, the Emgrand EV qualified for promotion catalogue incentives at RM2,000 per vehicle per month, making it a popular choice for government fleets, taxis, and e-hailing services. As of February 2026, this model line has been officially discontinued.

Model Overview

The Emgrand EV was positioned as a compact all-electric family sedan, highlighted by its strong value proposition, mature platform, and proven durability. During the peak subsidy period, its post-incentive price ranged approximately between RM125,800 and RM155,800. The subsequent EV Pro series targeted commercial e-hailing and taxi fleets, offering both ternary lithium and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs alongside an updated brand emblem. The 2022 Emgrand EV lineup featured two powertrain outputs—136 hp and 204 hp—with corresponding driving ranges of 430 km and 421 km respectively, carrying recommended retail prices between RM159,800 and RM169,800. Across the commercial and taxi sectors, the Emgrand EV earned solid acclaim for its well-balanced performance and low running costs.

Design Language

Visually, the Emgrand EV retained the core design styling of the petrol Emgrand GL, while incorporating dedicated EV styling cues to highlight its zero-emission credentials. Up front, it features a fully enclosed shield-shaped front grille paired with a darkened logo, replacing the conventional expanding-ripple grille found on petrol models. Along the flanks, a sharp beltline sweeps from the front wing towards the rear, complementing 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 205/60 R16 tyres to create a purposeful stance. Exterior dimensions varied slightly across model years: early EV300/EV450 variants measured 4,631 mm in length, 1,789 mm in width, and 1,495 mm in height with a 2,650 mm wheelbase, whereas the later EV Pro was lengthened to 4,755 mm × 1,802 mm × 1,503 mm with a 2,700 mm wheelbase. The clean rear end features a horizontal chrome strip connecting the tail lamps, with a smooth lower apron devoid of exhaust tailpipes.

Inside, the cabin adopts a symmetrical dashboard layout oriented towards practical family motoring. The flat-bottom three-spoke steering wheel is detailed with chrome accents, while seat upholstery is available in fabric or leatherette depending on the variant. Thanks to the 2,700 mm wheelbase, rear occupants enjoy generous legroom of around two fists, easily accommodating daily family travel needs.

Powertrain Performance

Under the skin, the Emgrand EV was fitted with several electric drive configurations across its lifecycle:

  • The original 2015 model featured a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 95 kW (approx. 129 hp)  and 240 Nm of torque, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 140 km/h.

  • The 2018 EV450 saw power output upgraded to 120 kW (approx. 163 hp)  and 250 Nm, lowering the official 0-100 km/h sprint time to 9.3 seconds (with actual tests clocking in at 8.63 seconds).

  • The high-output 2021–2022 EV Pro delivered a maximum output of 150 kW (approx. 204 hp)  and 240 Nm of torque, completing the 0-100 km/h benchmark in 7.7 seconds.

All variants sent drive through a single-speed direct-drive electric vehicle transmission. On the battery front, early iterations featured a 45.3 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, which was progressively upgraded to 52.7 kWh, extending the combined NEDC range from 253 km to between 421 km and 430 km. Selected variants also offered the ITCS intelligent battery thermal management system, ensuring optimal charging and discharging performance in ambient temperatures from -30°C to 55°C.

Chassis and Handling

The Emgrand EV features a front-wheel-drive layout, riding on front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam axle—a common and cost-effective setup for budget electric family sedans. The overall chassis tuning is biased towards comfort, effectively absorbing road undulations to deliver a planted and reassuring ride. Steering is handled by an electric power steering (EPS) system with speed-sensitive assistance. Braking hardware comprises front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, with selectable ECO and SPORT drive modes available on higher trims. The Emgrand EV also provides an adjustable regenerative braking dial, allowing drivers to tailor the energy recuperation strength to their liking.

Cabin and Equipment

The Emgrand EV's interior emphasizes practical utility and daily convenience. Infotainment equipment evolved across model years: early models were equipped with Geely's G-Link smartphone integration system and an 8-inch central touchscreen; the 2019 EV500 upgraded to the G-Netlink 3.0 in-vehicle infotainment system, supporting voice-activated controls for music, navigation, and climate settings via the "Hello, Emgrand" prompt, as well as smartphone app remote control; later EV Pro variants further introduced telematics connectivity and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

For comfort amenities, range-topping variants come equipped with a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat with memory, heated front seats, keyless entry with push-start button, an electronic gear selector, automatic climate control, and an in-cabin air purifier. Boot capacity stands at a generous 680 litres in its default configuration, expandable via 60:40 split-folding rear seats. In total, 23 storage compartments are integrated throughout the cabin, catering comprehensively to everyday utility and passenger needs.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the Emgrand EV comes fitted with Bosch's ESP 9.3 electronic stability control system, integrating ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist (EBA), and traction control (TCS). Passive safety features include dual front airbags and front side airbags as standard, with curtain airbags added on selected higher-spec variants. Active equipment across various trims includes reverse parking sensors, a reverse camera, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), electronic parking brake (EPB) with Auto Hold, and hill-start assist.

Battery safety was validated through seven rigorous laboratory tests encompassing fire resistance, airtight sealing, vibration endurance, and mechanical impact resistance. Furthermore, the body structure was engineered around European crash test standards, incorporating reinforced battery pack protective structures to enhance overall crash safety.

For driver assistance, given its budget-friendly positioning for family and commercial duties, the Emgrand EV focused primarily on core essentials such as rear parking sensors and a reverse camera. Cruise control was fitted on selected higher-tier variants, though the car did not feature more advanced Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assist systems.

Market Performance and Reception

As Geely's inaugural pure electric model under the "Blue Geely Initiative", the Emgrand EV enjoyed strong market momentum upon its debut. In 2016, retail deliveries reached 16,975 units, outperforming rivals such as the BYD e5 to emerge as China's top-selling pure electric car model of the year. However, with shifting market competition and a slowing product update cadence, sales volumes fell sharply from 2020 onwards. Industry sales data shows that in March, April, and June 2025, the Emgrand EV recorded 0 units in monthly sales.

In terms of owner feedback, positive reviews generally highlighted its spacious cabin, smooth power delivery, solid chassis setup, and exceptionally low maintenance costs. Nevertheless, some owners noted drawbacks, including noticeable range reduction during cold winter conditions and the omission of power driver's seat adjustments on specific trims. On the maintenance front, several out-of-warranty owners reported heating issues with the climate control system, which drew a degree of consumer attention.

In summary, as Geely's pioneer in the new energy vehicle sector, the Emgrand EV established a solid presence in the budget all-electric segment through consistent iterative upgrades. With Geely Auto restructuring its new energy brand portfolio and introducing dedicated all-electric platforms, the Emgrand EV has concluded its operational lifecycle. Although the model line officially exited the market in early 2026, its exploratory track record in product development and market positioning provides essential reference points for Geely's ongoing electrified vehicle lineup.
